Linear Equations TEst: april 13/14
There is a test for Unit 5: Linear Equations on April 13th for Day 1 and 14th for Day 2. See your teacher for extra help to prepare for your test!
mARKS dUE
Term 3 has come to an end and marks are due on April 7th. If you have not handed in any assignments, please have them to your teacher no later than April 5th. Report cards will be sent home the following week.
Welcome Back!
Please see the Math and STEM tabs for any homework. For Math only, Ms. Turner's Day 1 class will do the work after the other classes. Therefore, if a lesson and homework is assigned for Day 1 on March 21st, Ms. Turner's Day 1 will complete this work on March 23rd.
Happy Spring Break!
NO HOMEWORK! We will see you in two weeks! Be safe and have fun!
Looking Into the week before spring break:
Students are working on their final projects for the Optics unit in STEM, which is to build a telescope. They most recently have measured the focal length of their eyepiece and objective lens, and now will use these in their telescopes. As the entire project will be done in class, if a student is away from school this week it is important they communicate this with their teacher.
Update (And Happy lEAP DAY!)
The past week has been a busy week in STEM, with another busy week to follow. Here is an update of what we've been doing the past week, and what is to come this week.
Math:
We have started Unit 5: Linear Equations. Students have finished Lesson 3: Multiplying and Dividing with Algebraic Equations. The homework for this was on page 181-184 #3 (odd letters), 4, 5, 6 (odd letters) 7ab, 8a. Ms. Turner's Day 1 class will cover this lesson next class (March 1st).
Lesson 2: Continuing Adding and Subtracting-- Homework was a worksheet titled "More Word Problems." Each problem should be done using the GRASS method.
Lesson 1: Introducing Algebra with Addition and Subtraction. Homework was questions from section 5.1 in the workbook.
Students are using Algebra Tiles to solve algebraic equations. There was a mini quiz related to the homework.
Science:
This week, students dissected a cow eye after learning about our eyes (a type of lens) and how they function. We also looked into "Extending Human Vision"--- inventions that help humans see images with a better focus, such as telescopes, binoculars, cameras and microscopes. There was a ray diagram quiz. Finally, we are beginning our final project for our optics unit. Students will be building a telescope. On Friday and today (Monday 29/02/2016), students began measuring the focal length of given lenses, as they will be including those lenses in their telescopes.

The retest for Chapter 4 will take place in Ms. Turner's room (104) Tuesday after school. Here is extra practice. The answer key will be up tomorrow. Extra help is always available from your STEM teacher, homework club in room 204, and math tutorials in room 116.
Reminder:
There is a Chapter 4 (Square Roots and Pythagorean Theorem) Math test. For the day 1 classes this will be Friday, February 12. For Day 2 classes the test will be Monday February 15th. Please see your STEM teachers for extra help or missed notes.
Friendly REMINDER: rEPORT cARDS
Just a friendly reminder that marks are due February 2nd, 2016, and report cards will be sent home the following week. If you are missing work to give to your STEM teacher, please do so by Monday at 3:00. See below for a list of handouts and journal entries given after the Christmas break that you should have in your binder or journal.

SORRY FOR THE DELAY IN POSTS.
Apologies to all students and parents for the delay in the updating of the website. The site will now be up and running again on a regular basis so please do check back daily for homework and other updates.
Don't forget though to always write down homework in your agenda - this is very important. Also, don't forget who your study buddies are - they are there so you can call them if you are unsure of how or what to do.
Your teachers are also available outside of class time to answer any questions you may have or to help you with studying and homework.

september 30 - update to website
From now on, this page will have updates and announcements only. To see what we learned in class and what the homework is, please look under the menu option for MATH and STEM above. Thanks!
september 28/29 - kinetic molecular theory
This block started with bell work again and then the start of Grade 8 math - INTEGERS! The homework for this was to complete the attached assignment. Please look under the math tab for the answer key. Remember to check your work so that you can know if you understood or not!
In the science portion of STEM we looked at the particle model of matter and the kinetic molecular theory. First we went over notes on what they are, then we modeled the states of matter by being the particles ourselves, and then there was time to start on the worksheet. This too was for homework.
In class you didn't write it down, here is the homework:
1) Complete the math assignment (Check the math page for the answer key)
2) Complete the Kinetic Molecular Theory handout (both sides)

September 24 and 25 - processes of science
Today's class we completed bell work and the last iMath for the year. Next week we are going to start learning grade 8 math! After iMath we worked through notes on other processes of science beside graphing (there are many!!). In groups, you then worked through various stations using and practicing these skills.
Homework:
1) Complete the stations activity handout (due next class!)

september 22 and 23 - graphing
After the bell work and another round of iMath (Fibonacci Series!) we worked through some notes on graphing together, completing a mass vs. length graph. The rest of the class you had to work on the graphs of wrath.
Homework:
1) Graphs of Wrath (due September 24 for day 1 and September 25 for day 2)

september 18 and 21 - engineering design
This class was much like the others in that it started with bell work and then we completed another iMath. After that you completed the safety quiz. We then looked at the engineering design: we went over the steps together and then in pairs you worked through those steps by trying to build a 'boat' out of aluminum foil that would hold as much weight as possible.
SEPTember 16 and 17 - Scientific method
Today we completed another iMath where we considered how useful it is to look at numbers visually because we are 'brain-crossing.' We then looked at what the five steps are of the scientific method before starting a smartie activity. This activity required that you make use of the scientific method to answer a question about the colours in the box of smarties.
Here is your homework:
1) Study for the safety quiz next class
2) Complete and hand in the M&M/Smartie activity pages next class

september 14 and 15 - Safety
Today was a busy class! We first did bellwork, then the iMath Four 4's Activity, and then we finished with safety (general rules and WHMIS). We also got a chance to organize our binders by writing on our dividers and putting away our papers in the right place - remember - no loose papers!
Here is your homework in case you forgot:
1) Complete safety worksheet for next class (Day 1: Wed Day 2: Thurs)
2) Study for your safety quiz in two classes (Day 1: Fri Day 2: Mon)
3) Get your parents to sign the safety contracts by next class (Day 1: Wed Day 2: Thurs)

SEPTEMBER 9 and 10, 2015 - InTRO Day
Today, you were introduced to your STEM teacher and met your classmates. You were given the course outline and went through that with your teacher. The class ended with a Hoop Gliders activity. In case you forgot to right it down, here is today's homework:
1) Get your parents to sign the course outline and return to class next day!
2) Bring in all the materials that are on your course outline
